Core Web Vitals - What are they?

Core Web Vitals are measurable indicators that reflect the experiences of users who browse a given website. Core Web Vitals include:

  • LCP (Largest Contentful Pain) – an indicator responsible for loading performance,
  • FID (First Input Delay) – an indicator responsible for interactivity,
  • CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift) -an indicator responsible for visual stability.

Core Web Vitals are one of the factors that determine website quality. Other factors include mobile-friendliness, lack of harmful content, HTTPS protocol, and lack of intrusive full-screen ads (however, Google notes that elements deciding about website quality are going to be updated every year).

Core Web Vitals indicators

LPC

LPC indicates how much time a browser needs to load the largest website element – the value is measured in the Above The Fold section and shouldn’t exceed 2.5 seconds.

FID

FID is an indicator that measures page delay from the moment it starts loading to the moment the page is able to respond to the first interaction. FID should be less than 100 milliseconds.

CLS

CLS, responsible for measuring the stability of a website layout, is calculated as the sum of shifts occurring while the website loads (and not related to user interaction). It should be less than 0.1.
