What is rel=”sponsored”? – Definition

The rel=”sponsored” attribute is used to indicate sponsored, affiliate links, or other types of advertising-related links.

Google has so far required that all paid or sponsored links must have the nofollow attribute. On September 10, 2019, Google decided to evolve nofollow links. Now, there are 2 additional link attributes available to us to better understand the source of content and enable Google to collect more accurate data. These attributes are: rel=”sponsored” and rel=”ugc”.

Is It Necessary to Use This Attribute for Sponsored Links?

Google informs that using the “nofollow” attribute so far, for paid links, will still be acceptable. The rel=”sponsored” attribute is recommended, however, it is not necessary.
